Switzerland runs on foreign workers. In 2025 just under 35 percent of everyone employed in the country held a foreign passport, up from about a quarter in the early nineties, and in the first quarter of 2026 that came to 1.87 million people. Unemployment stood at 3.0 percent in July 2026. By European standards that is a small, tight labour market with a deep habit of hiring from abroad.

None of which makes it easy to get in from outside. Two things decide whether your application lands, and neither is obvious from the job advert. One is a federal rule that can legally put you five working days behind other candidates. The other is that Swiss employers expect a specific document you almost certainly do not have.

Where Swiss jobs are actually advertised

The market splits along language lines before it splits by sector, and the boards follow.

jobs.ch is the dominant generalist in German-speaking Switzerland and the first place most employers post.

jobup.ch is its counterpart in Suisse romande. If you are targeting Geneva, Lausanne or Neuchâtel, search there rather than assuming national coverage from a German-language site.

LinkedIn carries the international employers, the pharmaceutical and finance roles, and most of what genuinely operates in English. Our comparison of LinkedIn Jobs covers where it helps and where it thins out.

Job-Room, run by the public employment service at arbeit.swiss, matters far more than its traffic suggests, for reasons the next section explains.

Company career pages are worth watching directly. Swiss employers, particularly the larger industrial and pharmaceutical ones, often publish on their own site first.

The five working days you never see

This is the part that surprises people, and it is written into federal law rather than being a market habit.

Under the job registration obligation, an employer with a vacancy in an occupation where national unemployment runs at 5 percent or more must report that vacancy to the public employment service before advertising it anywhere else. Once it appears on the employment service platform, five working days must pass before the employer may advertise it elsewhere, and for those five days the listing can be seen only by employment service staff and by people registered as jobseekers with the public employment service.

The scope grew sharply this year. Occupations subject to the obligation covered about 6.5 percent of employment in 2025 and cover 10.8 percent in 2026, with cooks and cleaning staff among the occupations newly added. Unskilled construction work is the largest single category.

So if you work in one of those fields and you are searching from a public job board, you are seeing some roles a week late, after a pool of registered candidates has already applied. That is the system working as designed, and it is not aimed at you personally.

The practical response depends on where you are. Once you are resident in Switzerland, registering with your regional employment centre puts you inside that window rather than outside it. Before you are resident you cannot register, so check Job-Room directly alongside the commercial boards instead of relying on them alone.

The document Swiss employers expect

Swiss applications are built around the Arbeitszeugnis, a written reference certificate from each previous employer. Under the Swiss Code of Obligations an employee can require one, so domestic candidates arrive with a full set covering their career, describing duties and assessing performance and conduct.

Foreign applicants rarely have anything equivalent, and a dossier without them looks incomplete to a recruiter who is used to reading them. There is no perfect substitute. What works is supplying what you do have and being explicit about the gap: written reference letters where you can get them, named referees with contact details where you cannot, and a line explaining that reference certificates are not standard practice in your previous country.

A few other conventions travel less well than people expect. A photograph is still normal on a Swiss CV. Applications are usually a complete dossier rather than a CV alone, meaning a covering letter, the CV, reference certificates and copies of diplomas. And qualifications need a local reference point, because a recruiter scanning quickly will not know how your degree maps onto the Swiss system.

Language, and the English-speaking myth

Switzerland has four national languages and an international reputation that leads people to overestimate how far English alone travels.

In the German-speaking cantons, written business runs in standard German while the spoken office language is usually Swiss German. You are not expected to speak dialect, and most people will switch to standard German, but understanding it makes daily working life considerably easier. Suisse romande works in French, and Ticino in Italian.

Roles that genuinely function in English do exist in real numbers, concentrated in pharmaceuticals around Basel, finance and technology in Zurich and Zug, and the international organisations in Geneva. Outside those, a job advert written in German is telling you the working language, and applying in English signals that you did not read it.

Getting past the screening

Larger Swiss employers and most agencies screen applications through software before a person reads them, and the same failure modes apply here as anywhere. Job titles translate badly, multi-column layouts confuse parsers, and text inside images is invisible.

After the offer, a clock starts

One thing catches almost every new arrival, and it is worth knowing before you accept rather than after.

Swiss basic health insurance is compulsory and it is not arranged by your employer. You have three months from taking up residence to enrol with an insurer of your choice. Cover is then backdated to the day your obligation began, so you are not left with a gap, and insurers must accept you for basic cover regardless of your age or health. Miss the deadline and the canton assigns you an insurer, typically an expensive one.

Choosing between insurers, deductibles and supplementary cover is a genuine decision with real money attached, and it is a specialism rather than something to work out in your first fortnight. A realistic sequence

Decide your language region first, because it determines which boards and which employers are relevant. Build a complete dossier rather than a CV, and solve the reference-certificate problem deliberately instead of hoping nobody notices. Search jobs.ch or jobup.ch by region, and check Job-Room alongside them. Watch the career pages of fifteen or twenty employers you would actually join. Tailor each application to the language and wording of the listing.

Switzerland rewards thoroughness and local signalling over volume. A small number of complete, correctly formatted applications will beat a large number of generic ones.
